Storenvy is a social network that has created a community around stores. The site nurtures independent sellers from around the world. Users who shop can share products with others and highlight their favorite items through the “I Like This” button. If enough users click the button for a product, the item is featured in various areas on the Storenvy website. Users can also search thousands of items from many stores using the site’s category list or by entering a keyword to look for specific items. Storenvy was founded in April of 2008 by Jon Crawford. The team remains rather small, including CEO Crawford, Janette Crawford and advisors Willo O’Brien, David Hauser and Jeffrey Kalmikoff. The user community continues to grow as more individuals shop and open their own independent stores on Storenvy.
Buying and selling online is by far not a new concept. However Storenvy combines social networking and independent sellers to provide an enlightened version of this common activity. Users can buy from a unique selection of sellers positioned all over the world. Users can also build their own free store on Storenvy and promote the items sold by others simply by liking the item.
The Storenvy website welcomes visitors with a light blue background highlighted by whimsical clouds and the silhouettes of birds in flight. A bright sun peeks from the upper left hand corner while the main banner depicts a pleasant scene of all manner of strange being shopping and enjoying an outdoor market. The site presents a great deal of rich personality while keeping in line with good design practices that won’t overwhelm the visitor.
Visitors can join the Storenvy community by clicking on the small blue and white “Join Storenvy” button found in the upper right hand corner (beside the tiny shopping cart icon). The short registration form asks the user for a username, email address and password. A blue button at the bottom of the form invites the user to sign up through Facebook instead. After entering the information, the user can click the gold “Join Now” button to submit the form. Once the form has been submitted, the user is advised that they must check their email for an activation message which must be accessed to complete registration.
Storenvy entices users by offering a free membership for everyone. Shoppers can create an account without paying a subscription or set up fee. Store owners are also invited to create a store on the site for free. Unlike other ecommerce sites, Storenvy does not charge a set up or listing fee. There are also no transaction fees for sellers, which is another big plus for the independent store owner.
